Award Double Feature

Gilman Scholarship

Are you interested in studying abroad but concerned about the cost? Apply for a Gilman Scholarship to help fund a global experience!

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity. It aims to broaden the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints.

To apply, students must be a U.S. citizen, an undergraduate, and a Federal Pell Grant recipient. Two application cycles occur per year with deadlines in early October and early March; the cycle you apply during depends on the dates of your desired study abroad program.

The application consists of three essays:

  1. Statement of Purpose
  2. Building Mutual Understanding
  3. Follow-on Service Project Proposal

If you are a Pell Grant recipient, you will receive an email from the Office of National Scholarships confirming you are eligible for the Gilman and inviting you to join the Gilman Canvas page. From there, the office can work with you to make your application the best it can be. Winners of the scholarship often say they would never have studied abroad without it, so do not miss your chance to apply for this great opportunity!

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship is a fully funded summer study abroad program focused on language and cultural immersion. Participants take formal language classes, hold informal meetups with native-speaking language partners, take part in cultural programs such as cooking classes, and participate in travel to sites of cultural importance. The scholarship funds 13 languages, including Korean, Russian, Turkish, Urdu, Portuguese, and more.

Each year, applications open in early October, and the deadline to apply is mid-November. The application consists of a handful of short statements, and no letters of recommendation are required.
