Award Feature: NIH Summer Internship Program

The NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) is for current undergraduate, graduate, and professional students interested in exploring careers in research and healthcare. These are full-time summer research positions within one of the NIH Institutes and Centers (IC) in the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP). In addition to SIP’s intensive research experience, summer interns have access to professional development programs focused on core competencies needed for success in healthcare, research, and other science careers. They also include career programming and advice, as well as special events including the Graduate and Professional School Fair in July and a Summer Poster Day in early August, where interns share their research with the larger NIH community.

Summer interns work in a research group directed by a Principal Investigator (PI). Research opportunities exist in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences with opportunities to explore basic, translational, and clinical research. This year’s application is currently open with a due date of noon on Wednesday, February 18.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and at least 18 years of age. Students interested in biology, engineering, epidemiology, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, nursing, physics, computer science, bioinformatics, and other health-related fields are invited to apply.
