The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship enables Pell Grant recipients to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity. It aims to broaden the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints.
To apply in this cycle, students must be a U.S. citizen, an undergraduate, and a Federal Pell Grant recipient whose credit-bearing abroad program begins between May 1, 2026 and April 30, 2027; the application deadline is March 5.
If you are a Pell Grant recipient, you will receive an email from the Office of National Scholarships confirming you are eligible for the Gilman and inviting you to join our Gilman Canvas page. From there, we will work with you to make your application the best it can be. See our robust Gilman programming below. Winners of the scholarship often say they would never have studied abroad without it, so do not miss your chance to apply for this great opportunity!
